Sports Injury and Performance Management
Even athletes in excellent condition are in danger of injury, especially in high contact sports such as football and hockey. Physicians at the Ohio Orthopedic Center of Excellence are experienced in the diagnosis of injuries to bone, ligaments, tendons and muscles, and can identify the sometimes complex problems that can occur to knees, shoulders and other joints.
Sometimes, injuries can be treated at home with rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE), and pain medications. However, your physician can best determine whether home remedies are enough. In general, with an injury to a hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, foot, ankle, knee or hip, you should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
• The injured joint looks twisted, bent or otherwise out of its normal position
• You experience severe swelling within the first 30 minutes of injury
• There is numbness or tingling or change of color
• You hear a snap or pop at the time of the injury
• You experience instability or loss of normal movement in your extremity
Your physician may conduct a physical examination and recommend X-rays from the Center’s state-of-the-art imaging technology to diagnose the problem. Once the nature and severity of the injury is known, the physician will discuss with you a proper course of treatment.
The physicians at the Center will also guide your rehabilitation process, in concert with the physical therapy professionals at the Center. Together, they will help you get back on the playing field as safely and quickly as possible.
