Physical Therapist Assistant
Therapy Services Reports To: Director, Therapy Services
Physical Therapist Assistant Hours: Full-time / 40 hours per week
Performs selected patient treatments under the general supervision of the Supervising and/or Staff Physical Therapist, Director, or his or her designee, and has the responsibility for the overall direction, utilization, supervision, instruction, and evaluation of supportive staff, volunteers, and students utilized in the department/facility. Prepares patients and equipment for treatment; helps perform the housekeeping duties of the department/facility; performs other diverse duties as requested or required.
• Aids in the care and safety of patients; performed regularly every hour.
• Prepares equipment for patient treatments as requested by the Physical Therapist; relieves the Physical Therapist to perform his or her professional duties. Performed daily.
• Assists Physical Therapist in selected procedures, according to the Physical Therapist’s directions, by checking patient and equipment during treatment for both comfort and safety; to aid in patient care in the department/facility. Performed regularly every hour.
• Ensures Physical Therapy practices are consistent with the American Physical Therapy Association Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and Standards of Practice policy in this manual.
• Maintains a patient treatment schedule consistent with the needs of the department/facility.
• Confers with the person(s) most closely associated with the active management of the patient and to keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification, and/or progress.
• Treats patients and functions as a Staff Physical Therapist Assistant as necessary.
• Treats patients of all ages (e.g., infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, elderly, ages 0–120 years), race, creed, gender, and disability without bias or prejudice.
• Demonstrates respect and understanding of the patient’s right to treatment and right to involvement in treatment decisions.
• Practices ethical responsibility based on the cultural, ethnic and religious beliefs of the patients served and applicable law.
• Must be a graduate of an approved Physical Therapy Assistant program with a preferred minimum of two (2) years orthopedic department/facility experience, however new graduates with orthopedic clinical experience are encourage to apply.
• Must have, or be eligible for, State Licensure or Registration. Registration must be obtained within one (1) year, or as per state law. Must maintain and provide verification card for CPR certification including BLS/ AED training.
• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
• Familiar with cleaning agents and methods; physical layout of department/ facility; techniques of handling patients; policies, procedures, and regulations; operations of department/facility equipment; knowledge of physical therapy treatment techniques; general anatomy, physiology, physics, medical science, etc.
• Able to apply the theory of Physical Therapy; have the ability and competency to operate the equipment of his or her position; perform technical procedures, speak intelligently and in a professional manner before others; supervision and management skills.
• Skilled in techniques of handling patients, for patient’s and his or her own protection, efficiently assisting the patients; operation of department/facility equipment.
• Skilled in various treatment techniques.
• Must be able to instill confidence in patients, doctors, and personnel; determine proper procedures and methods and evaluate results; must make decisions on his or her own; adapt to emergency situations; alert to changes in the patient’s condition; alert to all activities of the department/facility.
• Must be willing to work under direction and take instructions and corrections; ability to reason; to remember names; details of instructions; must be alert, adaptable and flexible.
